Google gets us to play a game to give them metadata (and our time) for free. You couldn't pay me to do such a tedious job (most of my iPhoto albums are woefully ill-described), but a game is totally different thing. Just as Open Source relies on the 'gift-culture' of elite programmers (a result of the universal need for peer-recognition), so our need to play - Google cleverly pairs us cooperatively with a stranger - could drive low-cost contributions to the Lhotse of metadata required to navigate our information economy. This exploitation of our hard-wired game-playing nature has been done most recently by the worthy Darfur is dying.
